Some of my favorite critical essays (plus letters and biographical materials) are excerpted in the <a href = "http://www.amazon.com/Anna-Karenina-Translation-Backgrounds-Criticism/dp/0393966429/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278452185&sr=1-2" rel="nofollow">Norton Critical Edition</a>---it's nice because you can sample a few different critics, and then follow up on the ones that appeal to you.
